Why Open Doors?
Greg Evans recently sat down with Nate Riddle, the director of Open Doors, to hear more about their organization and some of the exciting changes that are coming. Green Valley Auctions & Moving started supporting Open Doors years ago when we would volunteer to help serve a meal and spend the night in the host church. When they started the Food Truck Fest, we immediately knew we wanted to be a sponsor.
Open Doors currently operates as a low-barrier thermal shelter for people experiencing homelessness who need a place to spend the night out of the cold, rain and snow. While the opening of their new “Homeless Services Center” will enable them to expand some of their services, their mission will remain the same:
“To provide safe shelter for the unhoused,
as well as compassionate support
and access to services
for all in the
Harrisonburg-Rockingham community.”
Open Doors is basically the first responder in the world of homelessness. They open the doors and offer assistance to those who are struggling, and they do so without judgment and without asking many questions.
At Green Valley, we support a lot of different local, national and international charities and we do so with a purpose. All of our giving is approached through the lens of Scripture with the intention of bringing honor and glory to God. Open Doors is close to my heart because of Jesus’ command “to love your neighbor as yourself.” Open Doors does just that, very few questions, very few requirements, just an offering of help.
