What’s For Supper?

This is a nightly question at our house, “What’s for supper?” Or maybe we ask, “What do you want for supper?” Or sometimes we say, “Do you want to grab a bite somewhere for supper?” No matter the form, no matter the answer, we always have something for supper. Even the question, “Do we have anything for supper?” really means, “I’m hungry, let’s eat.”

For far too many families (including working families), this question takes on a different, much more serious meaning. With rent being so high, even with everyone working, it only takes a couple of missed workdays for the bills to pile up. Families find themselves choosing between paying rent and eating.

While there are many different contributing factors that lead to food insecurity (and we will never be able to solve all of these), we can be the hands and feet of Jesus and “offer a cup of cold water.” There are many ways to approach helping the hungry, but I can’t think of a more efficient organization than the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank.

“With the mission of feeding the hungry in a non-judgmental manner, the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank serves 25 counties and 8 cities, distributing over 30 million pounds of food annually through approximately 400 touch points, such as food pantries and shelters, delivering food directly to where people are in need.”

We recently visited the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank and I had the chance to talk with Les Sinclair (Communications & PR Manager at BRAFB) and Greg Knight (Senior Director of Food Sourcing & Programs). We learned so much about the Food Bank and we want to share it with you! Check it out.

We would also like to invite you to join us in answering the question, “What’s for Supper?” During the month of February, we are collecting donations for the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. So, bring some groceries to Green Valley and help us fix a few “suppers” for families in our community.
