Big Brothers Big Sisters: Why Should We Get Involved?
We have all heard of BBBS, but what do they do? Why should we be involved?
Elizabeth and I have been involved with BBBS for many years and we really believe in the program. My simple definition of what BBBS does: Big Brothers Big Sisters is about matching adults with kids. It’s about mentoring, playing and spending time together. It’s about believing in a kid and making sure they know they are special. It’s about being a bright spot in a kid’s life, making them smile and giving them hope.
Think of the pressures kids face today, from school to social media; from friends, to fake friends, to bullies; kids today have a lot on them. Now imagine someone taking an hour or two a week to come along side that kid and to encourage them, to believe in them, to make them feel special. I have seen firsthand the changes in behavior, confidence, grades and overall happiness. All from playing basketball, throwing the football, playing a board game, helping with homework or just eating lunch together.
BBBS provides the opportunity for these relationships to grow and for these kids to soar. They take care of all the leg work, background checks to keep everyone safe and guidance/accountability along the way.
"When you support Big Brothers Big Sisters, you change lives of youth here in our community."
We had a chance to sit down with Lindsey Douglas, BBBS Director and talk about the organization & it’s importance to our community. Watch the video, visit their website, learn more and get involved! You will find out that these kids aren’t the only ones coming home feeling special.
